Sodium Bicarbonate (sodium bicarbonate 5% injection) is an electrolyte alkalinizer used to treat metabolic acidosis, which can occur in severe renal disease, uncontrolled diabetes, circulatory insufficiency due to shock, anoxia or severe dehydration, extracorporeal circulation of blood and severe primary lactic acidosis. Sodium bicarbonate is also used to treat certain drug intoxications, including barbiturates, or salicylates or methyl alcohol poisoning. Sodium bicarbonate is available in generic form.
The drug is often used to treat Diabetes .
This drug may have the following side effects:
- fever
- fluid overload (hypervolemia)
- infection at the site of injection
- blood clots in the veins (phlebitis)
- fluid leakage from injection site, or
