Mepergan (meperidine and promethazine) is a narcotic pain reliever used as a pre-anesthetic medication when analgesia and sedation are indicated, and as an adjunct to local and general anesthesia. The brand name Mepergan is discontinued, but generic versions may be available.

This drug may have the following side effects:

• hives,
• difficulty breathing,
• swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat,
• dark urine,
• rash,
• confusion,
• numbness,
• fainting,
• nervousness,
• restlessness,
• seizures,
• severe stomach pain,
• hallucinations,
• itching, and
• severe dizziness
• yellowing of the eyes or skin (jaundice),
• mental or mood changes,
• change in the amount of urine,
• increased sweating,
• trouble urinating,
• involuntary muscle movements,
• slow or shallow breathing,
• shakiness,
• very high fever,
• stiffness,
• slow, irregular, or fast heartbeat,
• persistent nausea and vomiting,
