Kayexalate (sodium polystyrene)

Kayexalate (sodium polystyrene) is a cation-exchange resin used to treat high levels of potassium in the blood, also called hyperkalemia. Kayexalate works by helping your body get rid of extra potassium. Kayexalate is available in generic form.
This drug may have the following side effects:
- nausea,
- loss of appetite,
- vomiting,
- diarrhea.
- upset stomach,
- constipation, or
The following drugs are related to Kayexalate, either as a replacement or used together:
- Aldactone (spironolactone)
- Dyrenium (triamterene)
