Iplex (mecasermin rinfabate [rDNA origin] injection) is a man-made form of insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) used to treat growth failure in children whose bodies do not make enough IGF-1. The brand name Iplex is discontinued, but generic versions may be available.

This drug may have the following side effects:

• headache
• blood in the urine,
• joint pain
• pain in extremities
• injection site reactions
• bruising
• ear infection
• swollen lymph nodes
• high or low blood sugar
• iron deficiency anemia
• bone pain
• abnormal fat distribution
• enlarged thyroid gland
• muscle wasting
• ovarian cysts
• swelling of the optic (eye) nerve, and
• enlarged tonsils
