Vitravene (fomivirsen) Injection is an antiviral drug used for the local treatment of cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), who are intolerant of or have a contraindication to other treatment(s) for CMV retinitis or who were insufficiently responsive to previous treatment(s) for CMV retinitis. The brand name Vitravene is discontinued, but generic versions may be available.

This drug may have the following side effects:
  • nausea
  • rash
  • fever
  • vomiting
  • diarrhea
  •  headache
  • abdominal pain
  • blurred vision
  • weakness
  • infection
  • eye pain
  • low levels of iron in the blood (anemia)
  • eye inflammation (uveitis) including iritis and vitritis
  • abnormal vision
  • cataracts
  • floaters
  • eye sensitivity to light
  • retinal detachment
  • pneumonia
  • sinusitis
  • systemic CMV, and
