Cystagon (cysteamine bitartrate)

Cystagon (cysteamine bitartrate) works by reducing the amount of cystine in the kidneys and is used to treat a condition called nephropathic cystinosis a rare genetic condition. Children with this condition develop a build-up of cystine in the kidneys which can lead to kidney failure and other medical problems.

This drug may have the following side effects:
  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • fever
  • drowsiness
  • dizziness, or
  • loss of appetite
  • stomach pain
  • tiredness
  • diarrhea
  • chills
  • body aches
  • flu symptoms
  •  nervous feeling
The following drugs are related to Cystagon, either as a replacement or used together:
  • Cystadrops (cysteamine ophthalmic solution)
  • Cystaran (cysteamine ophthalmic solution)
