Caffeine and Sodium Benzoate Injection (caffeine alkaloid) is used along with supportive measure to treat respiratory depression associated with over dosage with CNS depressant drugs, such as narcotics. However, because of questionable benefit and transient action, most authorities believe caffeine and other analeptics should not be used in these conditions and recommend other supportive therapy. Caffeine and Sodium Benzoate Injection is available in generic form.

This drug may have the following side effects:
  • headache
  • shortness of breath
  • excitement
  • agitation
  • restlessness
  • irritability
  • anxiety
  • hyperventilation
  • visual disturbances
  • nerve sensitivity (increased sensitivity to touch or pain)
  • tingling in the hands and feet
  • ringing or buzzing in the ears (tinnitus)
  • hearing loss
  • trouble sleeping
  • muscle tremors or twitches
  • increased urination
  • rapid heart rate, and other cardiac arrhythmias
