Benzonatate (benzonatate softgels)

Benzonatate is a nonnarcotic antitussive (anti-cough) drug used to relieve cough symptoms. Benzonatate is available in generic form.

This drug may have the following side effects:

• difficulty breathing,
• shortness of breath,
• confusion,
• difficulty speaking,
• visual hallucinations,
• tightness in the chest, and
• wheezing

The following drugs are related to Benzonatate, either as a replacement or used together:

• Tussigon (hydrocodone bitartrate and homatropine methylbromide tablets)
• Triacin C (triprolidine hcl, pseudoephedrine hcl, and codeine phosphate syrup)
