Ethyol (amifostine)

Ethyol (amifostine) for Injection is a thiophosphate cytoprotective drug used to decrease the risk of kidney problems caused by treatment with a certain anti-cancer drug (cisplatin). Ethyol is also used to help prevent a certain side effect (dry mouth) caused by radiation treatment for head and neck cancer. Ethyol is available in generic form.

The drug is often used to treat Dry mouth .

This drug may have the following side effects:
  • hives,
  • difficulty breathing,
  • swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat,
  • fever,
  • swollen glands,
  • skin rash,
  • lightheadedness,
  • chest pain,
  • muscle aches,
  • flu-like symptoms,
  • sore throat,
  • skin pain,
  • weak or shallow breathing,
  • burning in your eyes,
  • severe weakness,
  • unusual bruising,
  • yellowing of your skin or eyes (jaundice),
  • red or purple skin rash that spreads and causes blistering and peeling,
  • fast or slow heart rate,
  • severe or ongoing vomiting,
  • seizure, and
  • redness, rash, or blisters on the palms of your hands or the soles of your feet
