Alinia (nitazoxanide)

Alinia (nitazoxanide) is an antiprotozoal agent used to treat diarrhea in adults and children caused by the protozoa Giardia lamblia, or the protozoa Cryptosporidium parvum. These protozoa are sometimes the cause of travelers' diarrhea. Alinia is generally well tolerated when taken as directed.

This drug may have the following side effects:
  • hives,
  • difficulty breathing, and
  • swelling of your face, lips, tongue or throat
The following drugs are related to Alinia, either as a replacement or used together:
  • Lomotil (diphenoxylate and atropine)
  • Imodium (loperamide hcl)
The following supplements are related to Alinia, and may be used together with the drug:
  • Saccharomyces Boulardii (s.)
  • Vitamin A (s.)
  • Blond Psyllium (s.)
  • Guar Gum (s.)
  • Yogurt (s.)
  • Bifidobacteria (s.)
  • Lactobacillus (s.)
