Fosamax (alendronate sodium)

Fosamax (alendronate sodium) is a bisphosphonate that is a specific inhibitor of osteoclast-mediated bone resorption used to both treat and prevent osteoporosis, and to treat Paget's disease. Fosamax is available in generic form.

The drug is often used to treat Osteoporosis .

This drug may have the following side effects:
  • swelling
  • chest pain
  • new or worsening heartburn
  • pain or burning under the ribs or in the back
  • severe heartburn
  • burning pain in the upper stomach or coughing up blood
  • new or unusual pain in your thigh or hip
  • jaw pain
  • numbness
  • severe joint, bone or muscle pain
  • muscle spasms or cramps
  • numbness or tingly feeling around your mouth or in your fingers or toes
