Alcaine (proparacaine hydrochloride ophthalmic solution)

Alcaine (proparacaine hydrochloride 0.5%) is a topical anesthetic for the eyes used during eye surgeries and procedures. Alcaine is available in generic form.

This drug may have the following side effects:
  • hives,
  • difficulty breathing,
  • swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat,
  • blurred vision,
  • sensitivity to light,
  • redness of the eye,
  • tearing of the eye,
  • throbbing eye pain,
  • bloody eye,
  • stinging or itching of the eye, and
  • change in vision
The following drugs are related to Alcaine, either as a replacement or used together:
  • Marcaine (bupivacaine hydrochloride and epinephrine injection)
  • Marvona Suik (bupivacaine hydrochloride and epinephrine injection)
  • Iheezo (chloroprocaine hydrochloride ophthalmic gel)
