Campral (acamprosate calcium)

Campral (acamprosate calcium) works by restoring the natural balance of chemicals in the brain (neurotransmitters) and is used to help alcohol-dependent patients keep from drinking alcohol. Campral should be used as part of a complete treatment program that includes both counseling and psychological support. Campral is unlikely to be helpful to a person who has not already quit drinking or undergone detoxification. Campral may not be helpful to a person who is also addicted to other substances besides alcohol.
This drug may have the following side effects:
- nausea,
- headache,
- sweating,
- dizziness,
- vomiting,
- diarrhea,
- muscle or joint pain,
- weakness,
- sleep problems (insomnia),
- constipation,
- skin rash,
- loss of appetite,
- stomach pain,
- dry mouth,
- drowsiness,
- vision problems,
- back pain,
- gas,
- problems with memory or thinking,
- fatigue,
- weight gain/loss,
- cold or flu-like symptoms,
- decreased or distorted sense of taste,
- numbness or tingly feeling,
- impotence,
- change in or loss of sexual desire, or
- decreased sexual ability.

- Antabuse (disulfiram)
- Disulfiram Tablets (disulfiram)
- Revia (naltrexone)
- Vivitrol (naltrexone xr inj)
- Zofran (ondansetron hydrochloride tablets and solution)
The following supplements are related to Campral, and may be used together with the drug:
- Gamma-Hydroxybutyrate (Ghb) (s.)
